OSRS 1–99 Farming Guide

Why Train Farming?

Farming is one of the most unique skills in Old School RuneScape. Unlike most skills, it is trained passively over time, making it ideal for players with limited daily playtime.

By spending only a few minutes per day on farm runs, players can gain massive Farming experience. Farming is also highly profitable through herb runs and essential for Ironman progression.

Farming Benefits & Unlocks

  • Required for multiple high-level quests

  • 70 Farming for Quest Cape

  • 91 Farming for Achievement Diary Cape

  • Primary herb source for Ironmen

  • Chance to obtain the Tangleroot pet

How Farming Works

Farming is trained by planting seeds in patches across the map and returning after the crop has finished growing.

Crops grow in stages and can become diseased. Compost reduces disease chance:

  • Compost: Disease chance halved

  • Supercompost: 80% reduction

  • Ultracompost: 90% reduction

Some patches can be protected by paying gardeners, guaranteeing full growth.

Farming Pathways to 99

  • Early levels: Quests & low-cost methods

  • Main XP source: Tree runs

  • Profit & steady XP: Herb runs

  • Supplementary XP: Tithe Farm

Low-Level Farming (1–15)

Questing

  • Fairytale I: Level 1 → 17

  • Garden of Death: +10,000 XP

Hosidius Favour

Creating fertilizer while gaining Hosidius favour can boost Farming from 1–13 quickly.

Bagged Plants

Using bagged plants in a player-owned house allows fast early Farming XP with minimal requirements.

Tree Farming (Core XP Method)

Tree runs provide the highest Farming XP per time spent.

Tree Types & Unlocks

  • Regular Trees – Level 15+

  • Fruit Trees – Level 27+

  • Hardwood Trees – Level 35+

  • Calquat – Level 72

  • Celastrus – Level 85

  • Redwood – Level 90

Tree patches give thousands of XP per harvest and can be done once or twice daily.

Tree Run Strategy

  • Check health for XP drop

  • Clear patch via gardener

  • Plant new sapling

  • Pay for protection or use ultracompost

Fast vs Cheap Tree Path

  • Fast: Highest-tier trees + protection → ~70 days

  • Cheap: Willows/Papayas + compost → ~200 days

Herb Farming (Profit & XP)

Herb runs take 80 minutes to grow and are one of the most consistent money makers in the game.

Important Unlocks

  • Explorer’s Ring

  • Ardougne Cloak

  • Ectophial

  • Magic Secateurs

Always use ultracompost for minimum yield guarantees.

Best Herbs by Level

  • 32+: Ranarr

  • 38+: Toadflax

  • 50+: Avantoe

  • 85+: Torstol (best XP)

Tithe Farm

Tithe Farm offers active Farming XP and valuable rewards.

Ironman Farming Tips
